Maasai Safari Camp

The mess tent and campfire at the Maasai Safari Camp

The Maasai Steppe Conservancy is a 7,000-acre wildlife conservation area in the midst of Maasai heartland operated by Golf & Wildlife Resorts Ltd (a sister company to Kiligolf), approximately 2hr 30min from Arusha. Once farmed for maize and beans, the land has now reverted to its natural state. Two large sand rivers run through the estate and a dam was constructed to ensure the wildlife have sufficient water all year round.

The beautiful Maasai Safari Camp is nestled in a lovely cleared wooded/stony outcrop area, with several tents positioned all within walking distance to the main mess tent. All tents are fully furnished, including hot water showers on call, flushing toilets and electric lights. In the form of an Old East-African style luxury camp, the Maasai Safari Camp is the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day in the bush.

Since reverting back to its natural state, the Maasai Steppe Conservancy has become home to a plethora of game. Eland, greater and lesser kudu, elephant, hyena and a variety of cats including leopard, cheetah and lion, are amongst the animals that have returned. The resident animals such as the Maasai giraffe, zebra, gazelle and Cape buffalo feel safe in the conservancy, where Golf & Wildlife Resorts employ specially-trained rangers to prevent poaching.

The Maasai Steppe Conservancy gives you the freedom to enjoy walking, horse-riding, or driving through undisturbed African bush. We request you take our guide on game drives to avoid getting lost in the conservancy.

The 'Dam Drive' both early in the morning or late in the evening, is a wonderful game drive to spot a variety of animals meeting for a drink or wallow in the cool water.  The 'Sundowner Spot' just 10 minutes from the Safari Camp is the perfect place to enjoy late afternoon drinks and snacks catered by Wilson and his staff. With stunning views of the conservancy and the giant Lolkisale Mountain across the sand river, this is a fantastic place to witness an iconic African sunset.

Tarangire/Simanjiro Plains

The view of Lolkisale Mountain from the Maasai Safari Camp

The Maasai Steppe Conservancy is located between the Tarangire National Park and the Simanjiro Plains, within the Northern Safari Circuit. This area is an important migration route, containing the second largest population of migratory wild ungulates in East Africa (after the Serengeti-Mara system), and sustaining a sizeable elephant population.

For those who love wildlife, there is not better place to spend your days than here, surrounded by iconic African bush.

The Maasai

A section of the Maasai Steppe Conservancy has been given to the Maasai (a local tribe of semi-nomadic people) to ensure their cattle have sufficient land to graze. This is part of Kiligolf's mission to give back to local communities.
